Houston was awarded a Major League Baseball franchise on Oct. 17, 1960. The Colt .45s began operation in 1962, the same year the New York Mets joined them as members of the National League.In 1962, construction began on the $15 million Astrodome, and the Colt .45s played their first three seasons in an open-air facility on an adjacent plot.
