Many abortion providers in the state began operating with smaller staffs in anticipation of a dropoff in demand when the six-week ban took effect in September. But an unexpected surge in calls from patients seeking care earlier in their pregnancies has maxed out clinics’ capacity and forced patients to wait weeks for appointments — pushing them beyond the legal limit.
