Twenty years ago today, a silent salvo of snow left central North Carolina buried beneath a blanket that took days — even weeks in spots — to escape.The “Surprise Snowstorm” as it came to be known, left Fayetteville under as much as a foot of snow with areas of Moore and Harnett counties reeling under 18 inches.
