ABERDEEN — A Whispering Pines man died in a single-vehicle accident in Southern Pines on Tuesday afternoon.The wreck happened at 2:36 p.m. on Niagara-Carthage Road at North Connecticut Avenue.A Saab passenger vehicle crashed through a guardrail, came to a stop and caught fire in the engine compartment, authorities said.Bystanders pulled the driver, identified as Thomas Allan Dyer, 77, of Martin Drive, from the car when it began to burn, officials said.
